Announcement and Call for Papers

    in deutsch

The organizers of the 29th Deutsche Orientalistentag are happy to invite scholars from all over the world to participate in this major meeting. The Deutsche Orientalistentag (German Congress of Oriental Studies) is organized by the Deutsche Morgenlaendische Gesellschaft (German Society of Oriental Studies). It is being held every two to three years. The current event is hosted by Martin-Luther-Universitaet Halle-Wittenberg, one of the places where the Deutsche Morgenlaendische Gesellschaft was founded more than 150 years ago.

This time, the DOT is placed under the general motto "Barrieren-Passagen". This hints at the necessity scholars in many fields of Oriental Studies feel to re-define their focus, being confronted with an ever increasing number of subjects and methods of research.

The DOT traditionally brings together scholars from the following fields: Ancient Egypt Studies, African Studies, Studies in the Ancient Orient, Arab Studies, Studies in the Languages and Literatures of the Christian Orient, Indo-European Linguistics, India Studies (classical Sanskrit as well as modern Subcontinent Studies), Iranian Studies, Islamic Studies, Japan Studies, Jewish Studies, Art and Archeology of the Orient, Geography, Semitic Studies, Sinology, South-East Asian Studies, Turcology and Ottoman Studies, Central Asian Studies. Sections (Sektionen) are organized to accomodate papers and panels in these fields.

Papers and panels in these Sektionen can be registered online

Interdisciplinary panels can be organized as such, they do not have to find a place within one of the given sections. (Interdisciplinary panels are called Faecheruebergreifende Panels in the DOT terminology.) If you plan to organize such a panel, please contact the congress organizers at info@dot2004.de

Moreover, besides these sections and interdisciplinary panels, there are structures organized along methodological criteria, called Forum. There are five of these: Literature, Religion, Law, Anthropology and Politics/Contemporary History. It is hoped that the Forum structures will provide an opportunity to discuss methodological questions not normally or systematically dealt with in the traditional academic disciplines represented in the Sektionen.

Panels are preferred, but individual papers are possible and can be registered as such (they are called Einzelreferate in the DOT parlance). Language policy: There is no strict language policy. Every speaker can choose the language she or he thinks will best suit communication with the expected audience. German will probably be used in a majority of presentations.

Speaking time is about 20 minutes per paper, allowing for about 10 minutes of discussion.
Registration of papers and panels and also of simple participation (without giving a presentation) can be effected online at the site mentioned above; but you can also register per letter or fax addressed to:

DOT 2004
Institut fuer Orientalistik
Universitaet Halle
D-06099 Halle
Fax +49 345 5527123.

When registering online, please note the following: After registration, allow for a few days for the organizers to check and process the registration before it appears on the public sides of the congress website. No further confirmation will be sent. Then, after registration, please print out the registration form (download from the congress website) and send it per fax to Halle Tourist (address given in the header of the form). This is necessary because we need your signature for the payment of the registration fee. In the registration form, you can also ask for hotel reservation, you can book items out of the side program (guided tours, the congress open air party and so on), and you can arrange for payment of the registration fee. Participants not resident within the Euro zone can settle the registration fee on arrival. The amounts due are given on the registration form. The deadline for registering papers and panels is May 31, 2004. Absolutely no papers or panels can be accepted after that date. The printed program will be sent to all registered participants; we hope we can start mailing the program some time in mid-July. Abstracts should be sent in before May, 31. They will be made available online, but not in print. We are sorry that no funding is available for your transportation and accomodation.

Thank you for your attention, and hoping to see you in Halle,

The DOT organizers
