Dear Colleagues,
the 29th German Congress of Oriental Studies Eleventh DAVO congress is now behind us. On behalf of the organisers, we want to thank all participants, speakers, and guests for coming; we hope you spent agreeable and inspiring days in Halle and have returned home with good impressions.
The congress showed as also the media reports underline that the academic disciplines involved in the larger fields of oriental studies cannot be and are not treated as exotic small disciplines any longer, but that they are willing and able to make their contribution in expert knowledge which is required from them. At the same time, historical and philological research which is one of the centerpieces of our work and has to remain such, still is sometimes smiled at; but it is evident, as also the congress showed, that in many fields this work which cannot be reduced to mere valorisation of science as expert knowledge and is not devoted to actual developments only cannot be separated from the elaboration of such knowledge.
The next 30th German Congress of Oriental Studies will be held at Freiburg/Breisgau in 2007.
The internet site of the 29th German Congress of Oriental Studies will remain open until then.
Due to multiple requests, we publish the speech delivered by Parastou Forouhar on the occasion of the opening of the Congress: click here
With kind greetings from Halle,
the organising committee
